TermDefinition
Polysyndeton The deliberate repetition of conjunctions between items in a series. Ex: We have ships and men and money and determination
Irony A contrast between what is expected or started and what actually occurs or is meant. Ex: A fire station burns down while firefighters are away responding to another fire.
Antithesis A placement of contracting ideas and parallel grammatical structure. Ex: We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools
Tricolon A series of three parallel words, phrases or clauses . Ex: Government of the people by the people, for the people
Paradox A seemingly contradictory statement that reveals a possible truth ex. the only constant is change.
Pathos And appeal to the audiences emotions ex. a speaker describes hungry children, and frighten families mainly to stir sympathy
Rhetorical question A question asked for a fact rather than to receive an actual answers. Example, if we do not act now, what kind of world will we leave our children?
Colloquial Language Informal, everyday language associated with ordinary conversation ex. wording, such as that idea just doesn't fly with me
Ethos an appeal based on the speakers credibility, character, or trust worthiness. Ex: dr emphasizes her years of training and experience
inductive reasoning reasoning that moves from specific examples or observations to a broader conclusion . Ex: A writer examines several cities were public transit, reduced traffic, and concludes that expanded transit, generally reduces congestion.
