What is Ethnic Studies? An academic field that focuses on the history, culture, and contributions of different racial ethnic groups, especially those who have been oppressed and marginalized
Why is Ethnic Studies Important? Improves overall student engagement and academic success
Where was Ethnic Studies Formed? Formed in San Francisco State college (SFSC)
Black Student Union (BSU) A student organization, often found on college campuses, that supports Black students by promoting Black culture, advocating for social justice, and creating a sense of community.
third world Liberation Front (twLF) A group of student organizations, including Black,Latino,Asian,and Native groups, that came together in the 1960s to demand more inclusive education and equal rights on campuses.
Relevant Education The idea that education should reflect the cultural experiences and histories of the students it serves
Protest/Strike An action, like a march, speech, or gathering, where people show their disapproval of something people think is unfair or wrong, often to bring attention to issues and create change.
Self-Determination The ability of a person or group to control their own life and make decisions about their future, especially when it comes to identity and rights
Resistance The act of standing up against or fighting back against something harmful, unfair, or oppressive, such as social injustice or discrimination. It can involve actions, protests, or efforts to bring about change
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy/Education a teaching approach that connects a student's cultural background, lived experiences, and personal identity to their daily learning
How did Tucson Unified School district students practice the self-determination that the Black Student Union advocated for? Students in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) practiced self-determination by actively fighting for, shapes, and engaging with culturally relevant Ethnic Studies curricula.
What impact does Ethnic Studies have on youth? improves academic performance, increases graduation rates, and builds critical thinking skills for youth.
