Chapter 2 Terms

TermDefinition
Febrile To have a fever.
Lethargic Decrease in level of consciousness. In a medical record, this is generally an indication the someone is really sick.
Idiopathic No known specific cause. It just happens.
Epidemiologist A specialist in the study of the causes and the distribution of diseases in populations and the use of this data in public health.
Prophylaxis Preventive Treatment.
CCU Coronary Care Unit. Specializes in medical care of cardiovascular conditions, as well as caring for patients undergoing cardiac procedures.
NICU Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Special area in a hospital that give intensive medical care to newborn babies.
DDx Differential Diagnosis. A list of possible conditions that share the same symptoms.
CVL Central Venous Line. A long, soft, flexible tube placed into a large vein that leads to the heart.
Sig Instructions short for signa. From Latin, means label.
