inference a logical interpretation based on what is already known
hypothesis a scientific explanation for a set if observations that can be tested
controlled experiment an experiment in which only 1 variable is changed
variables factors that can change and effect the experiment
independent variable (I change it) the variable that is deliberately changed
dependent variable the variable that is observed which changes in response to the independent variable
group control exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for one independent variable
quantitative data numbers obtained by counting or measuring
qualitative data descriptive information
peer review an anonymous, independent review that looks for oversights, bias, and mistakes
bias a particular preference or point of view
scientific theory a well-tested explanation that unifies observations and allow scientists to make predictions
scientific law a specific description of how the natural world behaves
biology study of living things
stimulus a signal to which an organism responds
sexual reproduction cells from 2 parents unite to form the 1st cell of a new and different organism
asexual reproduction a single organism produces offspring identical to itself
homeostasis relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain
metabolism all the chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down material
unicellular organism made of one cell
multicellular organism made of many cells
differentiation the process of showing, making, or finding differences between things, or developing into distinct, specialized forms
