| Physical Property | A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical identity of the matter. |
| Chemical Property | A characteristic of matter that describes its ability to change into a different substance with different properties. |
| Physical Change | "A change in which the form or appearance of matter changes |
| Chemical Change | A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties. |
| Atom | "The basic building block of all matter |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one kind of atom that cannot be broken down by chemical means. |
| Compound | A pure substance formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio. |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture in which different substances can be easily distinguished and are not evenly distributed. |
| Homogeneous Mixture | "A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | States that mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical or physical change. |
| Reactant | A starting substance in a chemical reaction that is present before the reaction takes place. |
| Product | A substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction. |
| Velocity | The speed of an object in a given direction. |

| pH Scale | A logarithmic scale ranging from 0 to 14 used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. |
