| Word | Description |

| Anatomical position | Body erect, feet slightly apart, palms facing forward with thumbs pointing away from body |
| Anterior (or ventral) | describes the front/toward the front of the body. |
| Posterior (or dorsal) | describes the back/toward the back of the body. |
| Superior (or cranial) | describes a position above/higher than another part; toward the top of the head |
| Inferior (or caudal) | describes a position below/lower than another part of the body; near/toward the tail (in humans, the coccyx, or lowest part of the spinal column) |

| Proximal | describes a position in a limb nearer to the point of attachment/trunk of the body. |
