Acne Common skin disorder involving clogged hair follicles and oil glands; may cause comedones, papules, pustules, and cysts
Dermatitis Inflammation of the skin that may cause redness, itching, swelling, or a rash
Eczema Inflammatory skin condition commonly associated with dry, itchy, irritated skin
Psoriasis Chronic autoimmune condition causing rapid buildup of skin cells and thick, scaly patches
Cellulitis Bacterial infection of the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissue; usually causes redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness
Impetigo Highly contagious bacterial skin infection that commonly causes sores or blisters with a honey-colored crust
Urticaria Hives; raised, itchy areas of skin often caused by an allergic or immune reaction
Melanoma Potentially serious malignant tumor arising from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin
Tinea Group of fungal infections affecting the skin, hair, or nails; commonly called ringworm
Onychomycosis Fungal infection of a fingernail or toenail that may cause thickening, discoloration, brittleness, or separation from the nail bed
Macule Flat, discolored area of skin
Papule Small, solid, raised skin lesion
Pustule Raised skin lesion containing pus
Vesicle Small, fluid-filled blister
Nodule Solid, raised skin lesion that extends deeper into the skin
Ulcer Open sore caused by loss of skin or mucous membrane tissue
Lesion Any abnormal change in the tissue of the skin
Pruritus Itching
Erythema Redness of the skin
Cyanosis Bluish discoloration of the skin caused by inadequate oxygenation
Dermatitis Dermat = skin; -itis = inflammation
Hyperhidrosis Hyper- = excessive; hidr/o = sweat; -osis = abnormal condition
Subcutaneous Sub- = under; cutane/o = skin; -ous = pertaining to
