parts of the brain

Axon thin cord that carries electrical signals from the cell body
dendrite receives sensory information and passes it on to the cell body
cell body collects and interprets sensory information. May send an action potential if stimulated enough
myelin sheath coats the axon, allowing information to travel more quickly
terminal buttons neurotransmitters are released from these to transfer information to another neuron
neuron nerve cell
synapse gap between neurons where neurotransmitters pass between neurons
amygdala responsible for emotional responses and associations
hippocampus important in the formation of new memories
thalamus sensory gateway to the brain. Everything except smell
hypothalamus below the thalamus. manages bodily functions
endocrine system releases hormones
hormones chemical signals to the body
hindbrain medulla, pons, and cerebellum. Manages survival functions
midbrain manages reflexes
medulla functions for survival (i.e. heart beat)
Pons above the medulla in the hindbrain
cerebellum part of the hindbrain, responsible for balance
forebrain responsible for complex thought, planning, attention, and other complex processes
cerebral cortex outermost layer of the brain
subcortical features amygdala and thalamus are examples. Brain structures that lie below the cortex
cortical features the lobes of the brain, for example. brain structures within the cortex
prefrontal cortex makes up 30% of the brain. involved in complex thought, social behaviors, and empathy
occipital lobe responsible for vision
somatosensory cortex responsible for touch and feeling
