Bible Test

QuestionAnswer
Hermeneutics the study of principles by which we rightly understand and interpret God's written word according to its intended meaning
Interpretation the process of seeking to understand the meaning that God intended to communicate through words of the biblical author
Meaning what the author intended to communicate
Interpretation (with meaning) our attempt to understand that meaning
3 questions we want to ask 1. what does the bible passage say 2. what does the bible passage mean 3. how does the bible passage apply to my life
Common Interpretation Mistake "what does this verse mean to me/you?"
Exegesis drawing out from the text the meaning that is actually there
Eisegesis reading our own ideas, assumptions, or desired meaning into a text
The better question " what does this verse mean?" and "how does this truth apply to us?"
Application asks how the truth communicated by the text relates to particular people and circumstances
A passage has an objective meaning, but.... that meaning can have many legitimate applications
Text refers to the actual words, sentences, and passages that the author has written
Context the surrounding info. that helps us understand what those words mean and how they function within the authors communication
Immediate verses and paragraphs surrounding a passage
Literacy where the passage fits within the argument/story of the book
Historical author, audience, setting, culture, circumstances
Canonical how the passage fits within the whole of scripture
Inspiration God overseeing and directing men to write His words
The Bible claims to be..... God speaking to us
Inerrancy scripture, in the original writings, is completely true and free from error in everything it affirms because God, who cannot lie, is its ultimate Author
Infallibility scripture cannot fail, deceive, or lead God's people into error because it is the trustworthy word of the infallible God
