ECE I: Student Organizations

TermDefinition
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Education that prepares students for careers by combining academic knowledge with technical and workplace skills.
Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) A student-led organization connected to a CTE course that provides leadership, career development, service, and competitive-event opportunities.
Co-curricular Activities that extend and reinforce what students learn in the classroom.
Student organization A group in which students work together around shared educational, career, leadership, or service goals.
Chapter A local school-based group that belongs to a state or national student organization.
Chapter adviser A teacher who guides and supports the members and officers of a student organization.
Member A student who officially joins and participates in an organization.
Student officer A student elected or appointed to lead a chapter, such as president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer.
Program of work A written plan describing a chapter’s goals, activities, projects, and events for the school year.
FCCLA Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; a national CTSO for students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences and related courses.
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) A field of study that prepares students to manage personal, family, community, and career responsibilities.
FCCLA history FCCLA was founded in 1945 as Future Homemakers of America. The organization changed its name to FCCLA in 1999 to reflect its broader focus.
FCCLA mission To promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
FCCLA motto “Toward New Horizons,” expressing the organization’s commitment to growth and new opportunities.
FCCLA tagline “The Ultimate Leadership Experience,” a phrase describing the leadership opportunities available to members.
FCCLA purpose One of the organization’s goals, such as preparing students for adult life, strengthening families, encouraging responsible decision-making, and promoting FCS careers.
FCCLA creed A formal statement describing FCCLA members’ shared beliefs, values, and hopes for families and the future.
FCCLA colors Red and white. Red represents strength, courage, and determination, while white represents sincerity of purpose and integrity of action.
FCCLA emblem The organization’s official identifying symbol, which displays the FCCLA name and represents leadership and service.
FCCLA official dress Professional clothing designated for members and officers at certain FCCLA conferences, ceremonies, and competitive events.
Red blazer A distinguishing part of FCCLA’s official attire that represents membership, professionalism, and organizational pride.
FEA Future Educators Association; an organization created to help students explore careers in teaching and education. Some programs now operate under state organizations or Educators Rising.
FGE Future Georgia Educators; a Georgia program that identifies, recruits, prepares, and supports students who are interested in becoming educators.
PAGE Professional Association of Georgia Educators; the organization that supports the Future Georgia Educators program.
FGE chapter A school-based group for Georgia students interested in exploring careers in education.
Future educator A student who is considering a career as a teacher, counselor, administrator, media specialist, or another education professional.
Education pathway A sequence of high school courses that introduces students to teaching, child development, classroom practices, and other education careers.
Teacher recruitment Efforts to encourage qualified individuals to consider careers in education.
Teacher retention Efforts to support educators so they remain and grow in the teaching profession.
FGE Day An event where students explore education careers, attend workshops, meet educators, and learn about college teacher-preparation programs.
College of education A college or university division that prepares students for careers in teaching and other education professions.
Teacher certification Official approval showing that an individual has met the education, testing, and training requirements to teach.
Professional association An organization that provides members with career resources, training, networking, and professional support.
Professional ethics Standards that guide educators in making responsible, fair, respectful, and honest decisions.
Leadership The ability to guide, encourage, and work with others to accomplish a shared goal.
Leadership development The process of improving communication, decision-making, organization, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Teamwork People cooperating and sharing responsibilities to complete a task or reach a goal.
Communication skills The ability to clearly exchange information through speaking, listening, writing, and nonverbal behavior.
Public speaking Presenting information clearly and confidently to an audience.
Decision-making The process of examining choices and selecting the most appropriate action.
Problem-solving Identifying a challenge, considering possible solutions, and choosing an effective response.
Community service Unpaid work completed to improve a school or community and help others.
Service project An organized activity designed to address a specific need in the school or community.
Service learning An educational experience that combines classroom learning with meaningful community service.
Civic responsibility A person’s duty to contribute positively to the school, community, and society.
Volunteerism Freely giving time and effort to help others without expecting payment.
Competitive event An organized contest that allows students to demonstrate career, leadership, academic, or technical skills.
STAR Events FCCLA’s Students Taking Action with Recognition events, in which members demonstrate skills through projects, presentations, and competitions.
Conference A local, state, or national meeting where members participate in workshops, leadership activities, elections, and competitions.
Networking Building professional relationships with people who can share information, advice, support, and career opportunities.
Professional development Activities that improve a person’s career-related knowledge and skills.
Professional growth The continuing development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences needed for career success.
Career readiness Having the academic, technical, communication, leadership, and workplace skills needed to enter a career.
Lifelong learning Continuing to gain knowledge and develop new skills throughout one’s life and career.
Lifelong responsibility An ongoing commitment to making responsible decisions, helping others, and contributing positively to one’s profession and community.
