TermDefinition
Description uses sensory details and specific language to create a vivid picture of a person, place, object or experience. EX: writer describes a Beach at sunrise by focusing on the orange light, salty air, cool sand, crashing waves
Division and Classification breaks a subject into parts or groups in organizes those parts according to shared characteristics. Ex: divides social media users into creators, lurkers, commentators, and influencers, then explains the characteristics.
Process Analysis explains how something works how it's done, or how to do something step-by-step. Ex: an article explains how to register to vote by listing the steps from checking eligibility to submitting.
Anecdote brief story, told to illustrate a point or survey as an example of something, often shows character of an individual. Ex: a speakers argument about distracted, driving by telling a story of a Teen, who looked at their phone for two seconds then crashed.
Narration The act or process of telling a story or describing a sequence of events. Ex: writer recounts arriving late to school, missing the bus, running three blocks, finally slipping into class just before the Bell.
Argumentation One of three forms, which uses logos, ethos, and passive pathos to develop an effective means to convince the reader to think or act a certain way. Ex: writer argues that high school should start later with sleep research, attendance, data, and response
Comparison and Contrast Examines similarities and differences between two or more subjects. Ex: a writer examines how online classes and traditional are alike requiring assignments, but different scheduling, interaction and locations.
Cause and Effect Explains why something happens and/or the result that follow from it. Ex: Writer explains the sleep deprivation can lead to poor concentration and low grades
Exemplification Developes or supports an idea providing specific examples. Ex: Shows that social media can be useful for learning, writers discussions, students using tutorials, language apps and online study groups
Definition Explains the meaning of a term or concept often by clarifying its qualities, boundries or signifigances.Ex: An essay explains the sucess is not simply wealth but can also include fulfillment, meaning, relationship and personal growth.
