| Term | Definition |

| logos | An appeal to logic and reason using facts, evidence, examples and sound reasoning. Ex: Susan B Anthony crime for us, citizen to vote case that woman are citizens and therefore entitled to vote |
| Exigence | The specific issue, problem, event or situation that prompts a or writer to respond. Ex: Franklin Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor speech, right after the bombing |
| melodramatic | using exaggerated emotions, sensational, events, and sharply drawn conflicts to create dramatic effect. Ex: Patrick Henry ends his 1775 speech with Give me liberty or give me death |
| idiomatic expression | A commonly used phrase whose meaning cannot be understood simply from literal meanings of its individual words. Ex: Winston Church Hills signs of peace |
| Didactic | Form of fiction or non-fiction that teaches a specific lesson or moral or provides a model of correct behavior or thinking. Ex: Washington gives citizens, advice and warnings about political factions, national utility, and foreign entanglements |
| Juxtaposition | which normally unassociated ideas or words, or phrases are placed next to each other, creating an effect of surprise and wit,form of contrast by called attention to dismissal ideas and images ex: compares libertarian America to conservative America before arguing one |
| Chiasmus | In poetry, a type of rhetorical balance in which the second part is syntacally balanced against the first, but with the parts reversed. Coleridge: flowers are lovely love is flower like. Ex: John F. Kennedy let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. |
| Ononatopoeia | The use of words whose sounds echo through their sense. Example Pop and Zap |
| Hyperbole | A figure of that uses an incredible exaggeration or overstatement for effect If I've told you one time I've to you a million times. EX: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. |
| Archetypal Character | a universal, recognizable personality model or role that recurs across stories, myths, and cultures throughout human history. Ex: Ronald Reagan, the astronauts are presented as brave explorers who willingly face danger |
