What is the anatomical position? Standing upright and facing forward, head level and eyes forward, feet flat and directed forward, arms at the sides with palms facing forward.
What does prone mean? Lying face down/on the breastbone.
What does supine mean? Lying face up/on the spine.
What is the axial portion of the body? The head, neck, and trunk.
What is the appendicular portion? The upper and lower limbs.
What are the two major dorsal body cavities? Cranial and vertebral cavities.
What are the two major ventral body cavities? Thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
What are the three main parts of the thoracic cavity? : Pleural cavities, mediastinum, and pericardial cavity.
What are the two parts of the abdominopelvic cavity? Abdominal and pelvic cavities.
What is the difference between parietal and visceral? Parietal refers to the membrane lining the cavity wall; visceral refers to the membrane covering the organ.
What is serous fluid? Fluid associated with serous membranes that helps reduce friction.
Superior Toward the head.
Inferior Toward the feet.
Anterior Toward the front.
Posterior Toward the back.
Medial Toward the midline.
Lateral Away from the midline.
Intermediate Between a medial and lateral structure.
Ipsilateral On the same side.
Contralateral On opposite sides.
Proximal Closer to limb attachment/origin.
Distal Farther from limb attachment/origin.
Superficial Toward the body surface.
Deep Away from the body surface.
What does a sagittal plane divide the body into? Right and left portions.
What is a midsagittal (median) section? A section through the midline that creates equal right and left portions.
What is a parasagittal section? An unequal division into right and left portions.
What does a frontal/coronal plane divide the body into? Anterior and posterior portions.
What does a transverse/horizontal plane divide the body into? Superior and inferior portions.
What is an oblique section? A section that passes through the body at an angle.
What are the four abdominopelvic quadrants? RUQ, LUQ, RLQ, LLQ.
Most of the liver is located in which quadrant? Right upper quadrant (RUQ).
The appendix is located in which quadrant? Right lower quadrant (RLQ).
What are the 9 abdominopelvic regions? Right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac; right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar; right iliac/inguinal, hypogastric/pubic, left iliac/inguinal.
