Historical Thinking

TermDefinition
Inquiry The process of asking questions, investigating information, and learning more about a topic.
Compelling Question A big, interesting question that makes you want to investigate a historical or social studies topic.
Primary Source An original source of information created during the time being studied, such as a diary, photograph, letter, map, artifact, or speech.
Secondary Source A source that explains, analyzes, or interprets information from the past using evidence from primary sources and other sources.
Observation Something you notice or directly see, hear, read, or examine from a source or object.
Inference A conclusion you make based on clues, observations, and what you already know.
Ancient Belonging to a very long time ago, especially to early human civilizations and societies.
Civilization A complex society with organized government, culture, religion, economy, technology, and communities.
Conclusion An answer or final idea you reach after examining evidence and using reasoning.
Claim A statement or answer that you believe is true and can support with evidence.
