Fundamentals of chemistry

| matter | everything living and non living in the universe is made up of matter and occupies space-can be solid, liquid or gasses |
| mass | mass refers to the amount of matter present |
| weight | measure of how heavy something is-a result of gravitational pull on mass |
| chemistyr | branch of science that studies the composition properties, and interactions of matter |
| atom | smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element |
| electron | extremely small particle within an atom, almost no weight and carries a negative electrical charge, and is found within an atomic nucleus |
| proton | relatively large particle within an atom, carries a positive electrical chare and is found is within an atomic nucleus |
| neutron | relativity large particle within an atom, about the same weight as a proton, uncharged and thus electrically neutral, found within atomic nucleus |
| ion | particle formed from an atom that is electrically charged, because it has gained one or more electrons |
| molecule | particle formed by the chemical union of two or more atoms |
| elements | any of the fundamental chemical substances, each characterized by a distinct type of atom |
| bulk elements required 95% in the body | iron,copper, silver,gold , aluminum, carbo, oxygen, and hydrogen |
| trace elements | basic chemical substances , need in small quantities |
| ultratrace elements | elements that are toxic in large amounts such as arsenic ,may be vital in small amounts |
| compound | if the bound atoms are different elements then the molecules are considered compounds |
