Mult. Comparison

Understand Multiplication as a Comparison

QuestionAnswer
Multiplicative Comparison A comparison that tells how many times as many...such as 7 x 3 = 21 tells that 21 is 3 times as many as 7, and 21 is 7 times as many as 3.
Equation A mathematical statement that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions have the same value.
Factor A number that is multiplied.
Multiplication An operation used to find the total number of items in a given number of equal-size groups.
Multiply To repeatedly add the same number a certain number of times. Used to find the total number of items in equal-size groups.
Symbol A character such as a letter or question mark, that can be used to stand for an unknown number in an equation.
Unknown (Variable) The value you need to find to solve a problem.
Divide To separate into equal groups and find the number in each group or the number of groups.
Division An operation used to separate a number of items into equal-size groups.
Composite Number A number that has more than one pair of factors.
Factor Pair Two numbers that are multiplied together to give a product.
Factors (of a number) Whole numbers that multiply together to get the given number.
Multiple The product of a given number and any other whole number.
Prime Number A whole number greater than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself.
Rule A procedure that is followed to go from one number or shape to the next in a pattern.
Pattern A series of numbers or shapes that follow a rule to repeat or change.
Expression One or more numbers, unknown numbers and/or operation symbols that represent a quantity.
Remainder The amount left over when one number does not divide another number a whole number of times.
Estimate (verb) To make a close guess based on mathematical thinking.
Reasonable Something that makes sense when given facts are taken into account.
