Rocks
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Igneous Rocks | Formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. |
| Intrusive Igneous Rocks | Formed from magma, cools slowly, large crystals form. |
| Extrusive Igneous Rocks | Formed from lava, cools quickly, small or no crystals form, may be vesicular (air bubbles). |
| Sedimentary Rocks | Formed from sediments going through the WEDCC process. |
| Weathering | First, rocks are weathered, or broken down into smaller pieces called sediments. |
| Erosion | Second, sediments get eroded or carried by rivers. |
| Deposition | Third, Rivers deposit or drop the sediments into larger bodies of water where they form layers. |
| Compaction | Fourth, the weight of the layers and water compact, or squish the sediments together. |
| Cementation | Last, dissolved minerals in the water cement or glue the sediments together. |
| WEDCC | Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, Compaction, Cementation |
| Metamorphic Rocks | Formed from heat and pressure. |
| Foliated Metamorphic Rocks | Possesses ribbons / bands. Ex. if you cut a cake, you will see the "layers". |
| Non-foliated Metamorphic Rocks | Does not possess ribbons / bands. Ex. a tiger has stripes on the outside... but on the inside, are there still stripes? |
