Forms of Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic Energy | The energy of movement and motion |
| Potential Energy | Stored energy - has the potential to move |
| Electrical Energy | the energy of electric charges (protons, neutrons, electrons). Used for charging phones, hair dryers, ovens, etc |
| Mechanical Energy | a combination of motion, shape and position. It is equal to KE+PE |
| Sound Energy | Vibrations in that move through the air and make noises that we hear. (a speaker, a phone, a drum, etc) |
| Electromagnetic Radiation Energy (Radiant Energy) | VISIBLE LIGHT!!! |
| Thermal Energy | the total KE and PE of particles in an object. (Heat Energy) |
| Nuclear Energy | energy stored in the center, the nucleus, of an atom. |
| Chemical Energy | a form of potential energy stored in the bonds that hold atoms and molecules together= food, wood, photosynthesis |
| Nuclear Fission | splitting apart atoms - occurs in power plants |
| Nuclear Fusion | pushing atoms together - occurs in the sun |
| Elastic Potential Energy | Deals with being stretched or compresed |
| Gravitational Potential Energy | deas with height from ground and objects mass. The higher from the ground= more GPE. Lower to the ground= Less GPE |
| if objects are hot | This means they have a lot of thermal energy |
| if objects are cold | This means they have little thermal energy |
| different charges can result in | electricity. |
