Imperialism A policy of exerting economic, political, or military control over weaker nations.
Isolationism Avoiding entanglements in foreign countries.
Expansionism A policy similar to imperialism but focuses on increasing a countries territory.
Protectorates Countries that are partly controlled by a stronger country.

Annex Take possession of
Alfred T. Mahan Captain of the U.S. navy, proposed an international network of naval bases that would improve the U.S. world power.
Queen Liliuokalani 1891. Dismissed the legislature, prevented a constitution that ridded settlers of their power.
Spheres of Influence Claims of exclusive economic and trading authority.
Reparations Forced compensation
John Hay/Open Door Policy Proposed the "Open Door Policy" / American proposal that aimed to establish equal access to ports among countries trading with china.
Boxer Rebellion Rebels who attacked Chinese leaders
Yellow Journalism A type of sensationalized news writing, using exaggeration, melodrama, and outright lies to attract readers.
U.S.S. Maine A U.S. battleship sent to Havana, Cuba, to protect American citizens and property.
George Dewey Commodore, attacked the Spanish navy at Manila Bay.
Theodore Roosevelt Resigned as assistant secretary of the navy to lead the regiment.
Guerrilla War A war fought by unconventional means (Sabotage, Ambushes, and unexpected raids)
Emilio Aguinaldo Leader of the rebellion against Spain before adn during the Spanish-American war, believed the U.S. had promised the Filipinos independence.
American Anti-Imperialist League Became a voice against McKinley's Foreign Policy decisions.
Isthmus Strip of land between two bodies of water.
Insurrection Rebelion
Luis Munox Rivera Leader of Puerto Rican independence movement, negotiated with Spanish government for islands independence.
Big Stick Diplomacy Negotiate peacefully while flexing its military strength.
Roosevelt Corollary Amended the monroe doctrine that opposed European interference in the Americas.
