| altitude | The vertical distance above sea level |
| barometer | Instrument/tool used to measure air pressure. |
| global winds | The difference in pressure between regions of the Earth creates this. Can influence local weather. |
| coriolis effect | The curving of global winds due to the rotation of the Earth. Creates global circulation cells and wind belts. |
| hadley cell | Located between 0 degrees (equator) to 30 degrees latitude N/S. Winds blow towards the equator from east to west, creating the global wind belt known as the trade wind. |
| ferrel cell | Located between 30 degrees to 60 degrees latitude N/S. Winds blow toward the poles from west to east, creating the westerlies wind belt. |
| polar cell | Located between 60 degrees to 90 degrees latitude N/S. Winds blow away from the poles from east to west, forming the easterlies wind belt. |
| westerlies | Winds blowing toward the poles, west to east, between 30-60 degrees latitude N/S. Responsible for moving weather systems across the US. |
| easterlies | Winds blowing away from the poles, east to west, between 60-90 degrees latitude N/S. |
| jet streams | Global winds that travel in higher altitudes from east to west. There are two jet streams (polar and subtropical) in each hemisphere. |
| local winds | Winds created by mountains, valleys, lakes, and oceans that blow over smaller, shorter distances. |
| valley breeze | A cool wind that blows up a mountain during the day. |
| mountain breeze | a wind that flows down a mountain at night. |
| monsoon | A seasonal change in wind direction caused by differences in heating and cooling of land and water. Can travel farther distances and affect large areas. |
| high-pressure system | Cool, dense air that sinks towards Earth's surface, spinning clockwise. Causes sunny, stable weather conditions. |
| low-pressure system | Warm, less dense air that rises above Earth's surface, spinning counterclockwise. Cause stormy, turbulent weather. |
| isobars | Lines connecting points of equal atmospheric pressure. |
| meteorologist | A scientist who studies weather systems and patterns. |
| air mass | A large body of air that has relatively uniform temperature and humidity. They form when air sits over a region for many days. |
| cold front | Occurs when a cold air mass pushes a warm air mass, forcing the warm air to rise. Showers and thunderstorms can form along the edge of the front. |
| warm front | Occurs when a warm air mass pushes a cold air mass. Produces steady rain along and ahead of the front. |
| stationary front | A boundary between two air masses pushing against each other, neither strong enough to move or replace the other. Mostly forms an overcast sky. |
| occluded front | Forms when two cold air masses cover a warm air mass. Typically forms thunderstorms. |
| weather map | A visual display that shows several forms of weather data. Used by meterologists. |
