| Prefix | A single letter or group of letters attached to the front of a root word |
| Suffix | A single letter or group of letters attached to the end of a root word |
| Anterior | Head end |
| Dorsal | Back of the body |
| Ventral | Belly side |
| Medial | Near the midline |
| Posterior | Tail end or rear |
| Lateral | Near the side of the body |
| Cephalic | Near the head |
| Caudal | Near the tail or inferior end |
| Proximal | Near the point of origin |
| Inferior | Closer to the soles of the feet |
| Distal | Away from the point of origin |
| Superior | Closer to the top of the head |
| Superficial | Closer to the surface of the body or above |
| Deep | Farther from the surface of the body |
