Integumentary System

Stratum Corneum Very top, protective layer of the skin
Epidermis the Outermost layer that is visible
Dermis layer under the epidermis that is deeper and thicker. It has fewer cells and more thick fibers. It is home th the hair follicles, nerves and Glands.
Squamous Cell Scaly Appearance ( the Skin has a scaly Appearance under Microscope.
-Pil/o, -trich/o Hair Ex. Piloid, atrishosis
-adip/o, -lip/o, -steat/o Fat Ex. adipocyte, Lipoma (fat cell) , (Fat tumor)
The skin has two types of Glands, What are they? Sweat Glands = -hidr/o = Sweat Sebaceous Glands = -sebace/o , -seb/o = Oil glands
Squam/o Scale Ex. Squamous Layer when you have a sunburn and skin is peeling, it is referred to desquamation.
-hidr/o Sweat Ex. Hyperhidrosis
-onych/o, AWN-ih-koh -ungu/o Nail Ex. Onchalgia (nail pain), Subungual (under nail or below nail)
-Seb/o -Sebace/o Oil Ex. Sebolith, Pilosebaceous
-crypt/o Hidden ex. ingrown toenail
Skin abnormalities are categorized into what 2 groups? Skin texture: harness/horniness (kerat/o), Dryness (xer/o) or Skin color: whiteness, redness, yellowness, blackness

Albinism lack of pigment in skin causing Patient to look white

Petechia puh-TEE-kee-yah (VL) a small bruise
ecchymosis ek-ih-MOH-sis a larger bruise
cicatrix (plural: cicatrices) (VL) Scar
Keloid (VL) overgrowth of Scar tissue Kel / oid

Epidermal Tumors Tumors on the skin
Nevus NEE-vus Mole latin for birthmark or mole
Dysplastic Nevus A mole with bad changes/formation (often precancerous)
Verruca Ver-ROO-kah Wart
Culture & Sensitivity (C&S) Growing Microorganisms in Isolation in order to determine which drugs they might respond to.
Biopsy (Bx) Removal of tissue in order to examine it (with your own two eyes)
Excisional Biopsy removal of an entire lesion for examination (to cut it out)
Incisional Biopsy removal of a portion of a lesion for examination (to cut into it)
Dermatoscope an instrument to look at the skin
Dermatoscopy procedure for looking at the skin
Adipocele AD-hi-poh-SEEL a hernia filled with fatty tissue adipo / Cele fat / hernia
Dermatofibroma a fibrous skin tumor
erythrocyanosis a red and/or blue skin condition
keratogenic causing horny skin condition
keratosis horny skin condition
Necrosis tissue death
onychia a nail condition
onychocryptosis an ingrown nail
onycholysis the loss of a nail
onychomalacia AWN-ih-koh-mah-LAY-shah abnormal softening of the nail

Paronychia a condition of the tissue around the nail
