|---|---|
| Observation | Orderly direct information, gathering about a natural phenomenon. observing something or someone to gain info |
| Inference | assumption based on prior experience |
| Scientific question | A clear specific and testable inquiry about the natural world that can be answered through observation, experimentation, or measurement |
| Hypothesis | testable explanation of a situation |
| Prediction | a specific, testable statement about what should happen if a hypothesis or a theory is correct |
| Scientific Investigation | A process of finding the answer to a question using various research methods |
| Experiment | procedure performed in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis and collect precise data |
| Data | Quantitative or qualitative info gained from a scientific investigation |
| Evidence | The available body of facts or info indicating whether a belief or preposition is true or valid |
| Conclusion | an evidence-based statement that interprets experimental results, explains whether the hypothesis is supported, and connects findings to the original research question |
| Independent variable | the variable that a scientist changes or controls to test its effect on the dependent variable |
| Dependent Variable | The variable being tested on in the experiment |
| Controlled variable (constant) | The variables that do not get changed throughout the experiment. |
| Control Group | A group separated from the main experiment so the independent variable cannot influence the results |
| Experimental group | the group that is being tested on to compare to a control group |
| Trial | A test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something |
| Sample size | A smaller part of a large population to represent it in an experiment |
| Repeated trials | The process of doing the same experiment many times to increase the reliability and accuracy of the results |
| Fair test | An experiment that only changes one variable while keeping all the other variables constant |
| Bias | An error that skews research results away from the true value |
| Qualitative data | Descriptive or interpretive info that represents qualities |
| Quantitative Data | numerical info that represents measurable quantities |
| Data Table | A structure format for organizing and storing data in rows and columns forming a grid |
| Bar graph | A diagram in which the numerical values of variables are represented by the height or length of lines or rectangles of equal width |
| Line graph | A chart that connects ordered data points with line segments to show how a value changes over time |
| X-Axis | The horizontal Axis |
| Y-axis | The vertical axis |
| Scale | A set of numbers on a graph that indicates intervals for measurement, helping to accurately represent the and interpret data |
| Trend | the general direction or tendency of changes in a set of data over time across variables |
| Outlier | Value in a dataset that is significantly different from the other values in the dataset. |
