Unit 1 Science

TermDefinition
Physical Change A change in how something looks, feels, or changes state, but it is still the same substance. Example: Ice melting into water.
Chemical Change A change that creates a new substance with new properties. Example: Wood burning into ash.
Reactants The substances that are made in a chemical reaction. Example: The gas and foam produced by vinegar and baking soda.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space. Example: Air, water, books, and people.
Mixture Two or more substances combined without forming a new substance. Example: Salad or trail mix.
Melting When a solid changes into a liquid because heat is added. Example: Ice melting.
Freezing When a liquid changes into a solid because heat is removed. Example: Water becoming ice.
Evaporation When a liquid changes into a gas because heat is added. Example: A puddle drying up.
Conductivity How well something allows electricity to move through it. Example: Metal is a good conductor.
Malleability The ability of a material to be hammered or shaped without breaking. Example: Aluminum can be flattened into foil.
Sublimation When a solid changes directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first. Example: Dry ice turning into carbon dioxide gas.
Gas A state of matter with no definite shape or volume. It spreads out to fill any container. Example: Air.
Liquid A state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape. Example: Water.
Ductile The ability of a material to be stretched into a wire. Example: Copper used in electrical wires.
Phase Change A change from one state of matter to another. Example: Melting, freezing, evaporation, or condensation.
Solid A state of matter with a definite shape and volume. Example: A brick or an ice cube.
Condensation When a gas changes into a liquid because it loses heat. Example: Water droplets forming on a cold soda can.
Solubility The ability of one substance to dissolve in another. Example: Sugar dissolving in water.
