literary terms

TermDefinition
major characters the protagonist, antagonist, and other characters that have a large role in a story
protagonist the most important character in a story; the action of a story revolves around this character
antagonist the character or force that opposes the character or force that opposes the protagonist
Minor characters characters who take place in the action but are not the focus of attention; they have a small role in a story .
static characters characters who do not change throughout a story
dynamic characters characters who change throughout a story
Characterization: The way in which an author reveals the traits of characters
Direct Characterization: the author directly states a character’s traits
Indirect Characterization requires the reader to infer a character’s traits through STEAL
conflict a struggle between conflicting forces
Central conflict the main conflict between the protagonist and antagonist
Internal Conflict: struggles that occur within the mind of a character
External Conflict: struggles that come from an outside source
Character vs. Self a conflict in which the main character is at odds with an internal problem, such as fear, shyness, or guilt
Character vs. Character a conflict in which the main character has a problem with another character
Character vs. Nature a conflict in which the main character struggles against a harsh environmental or natural disaster
Character vs. Society a conflict in which the main character faces a problem with a part or the whole of society
Character vs. Fate a conflict in which the main character struggles with a force that seems beyond the character's control
Character vs. Supernatural a conflict in which the main character struggles with a force that is not of the human world
