| contrast | a noticeable difference between elements, such as light and dark or rough and smooth |
| balance | the visual distribution of elements so an artwork feels stable |
| focal point | the area of an artwork that attracts the viewer's attention first |
| foreground | the part of an artwork that appears closest to the viewer |
| middle ground | the area of artwork between the foreground and background |
| background | the part of an artwork that appears farthest from the viewer |
| overlap | when one shape, image, or material is placed partly over another |
| layering | building an artwork by placing materials or images on top of one another |
| tearing | ripping paper or another material to create shapes or edges for an artwork |
| cutting | using scissors or another safe tool to create specific shapes or edges |
| found objects | everyday or natural objects collected and used as art media |
| ephemera | small, usually paper items kept for their visual or historical interest, such as tickets or labels |

| unity | a sense that all parts of an artwork belong together |
| variety | using different elements to create interest and avoid sameness |
| negative space | the empty area around or between objects and shapes |
| positive space | the areas occupied by objects, shapes, or images |
| value | how light or dark a color or area appears |
| adhesive | a material used to attach collage pieces, such as glue or paste |
| alteration | changing an existing image or material by cutting, tearing, painting, drawing, or combining it with something else |
