Intra-specific competition -Individuals compete with others of their own species
Inter-specific competition -Individuals compete with others of a different species that require similar resources
Competitive Exclusion Principle Two species that use resources exactly the same way cannot coexist. One of the two competitors will always have an ever so slight advantage over the other that leads to a decrease in the inferior competitor population.
Niche a species’ role in its community, and can be thought of as what an organism does for a living.
Example of niche A barnacle is a crustacean that attaches to a surface, like rocks along the shore of an ocean. The barnacle’s niche includes where it attaches to rocks, the amount of seawater and air it is exposed to, and the food it consumes.
Ecology The study of interactions between organisms and their environment.
Symbiotic Relationships Close, long-term ecological relationships between two different species in which at least one species benefits.
Commensalism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected.
Mutualism A symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit.
Competition Occurs when organisms use the same limited resource, so there isn’t enough for all of them.
Ecosystem stability The ability of an ecosystem to maintain relatively balanced, consistent conditions over time despite disturbances.
Trophic levels The feeding position an organism occupies in a food chain (e.g., producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer).
Primary consumer An organism that eats producers (mostly herbivores).
Secondary consumer An organism that eats primary consumers.
Tertiary consumer An organism that eats secondary consumers.
Decomposer An organism that breaks down dead organisms and waste, returning nutrients to the ecosystem.
Biodiversity The variety of different species living within an ecosystem or region.
Example of mutalism bees pollinating flowers: the bee gets nectar, the flower gets pollinated.
Example of commensalism barnacles attached to a whale, hitching a ride and filter-feeding without affecting the whale.
Example of parasitism a tick feeding on a dog’s blood.
What is the 10% rule? Only about 10% of the energy available at one trophic level is transferred to (available to) the next trophic level; the remaining ~90% is lost as heat or used for the organism’s own life processes.
Species A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Population All the members of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
Community All the different populations (species) living and interacting in the same area.
Abiotic factors The nonliving parts of an environment (water, temperature, sunlight, soil, air, etc.).
Biotic factors The living parts of an environment (organisms).
Ecosystem A community of organisms together with the abiotic (nonliving) environment they interact with.
Density dependent Density-dependent means that the effect of an environmental factor on a population's growth rate changes depending on how dense the population is. A process where birth and death rates change because of the number of individuals in a given area.
Density independent any force or event in ecology that affects the size of a population and its death rate regardless of how close together or numerous the individuals are in a given area
Carrying capacity Carrying capacity is the maximum number of individuals of a specific species that an environment can sustainably support over a long period of time
