Chapter 1
| Chemistry | Study of matter, its properties, and the changes it undergoes |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Element | A substance which can not be decomposed to simpler substances |
| Compound | A substance which can be decomposed to simpler substances because it is made up of more than one element |
| Atom | Building blocks of matter |
| Intensive properties | A characteristic of matter that does not depend on the amount or size of the sample. Examples: density, boiling point, color (important for IDENTIFYING substance) |
| Extensive properties | A physical property of matter that changes depending on the amount of substance present in a sample. Examples: mass, volume, energy |
| Physical changes | Changes in matter that do NOT change the composition of a substance. Examples: shredding paper, breaking glass, boiling water |
| Chemical changes | A process where one or more substance turns into entirely new substances with different physical and chemical properties. Examples: Fireworks, frying egg, photosynthesis |
| Energy | The capacity to do work or transfer heat |
| Precision | How close repeated measurements of the same thing are to each other. (Consistency) |
| Accuracy | How closely individual measurements agree with the correct, or "true" value. (Correctness) |
