| Constant | Something that stays the same during an experiment. |
| Variable | Any factor, trait, or condition that can change or be changed in an experiment. |
| Dependent variable | The variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable. |
| Experimental group | The group in a research study or scientific experiment that receives the specific treatment, intervention, or variable being tested. |
| Independent variable | The variable that is deliberately changed. |
| Inference | A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know. |
| Observation | The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way. |
| Peer review | Scientists share findings with other scientists by publishing their hypotheses, experimental methods, results, and analysis in scientific journals. |
| Bias | A personal, rather than scientific, point of view for, or against, something. |
| Controlled group | Is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable. |
