0.2 NOS Scientific Method Vocab

| observation | obtaining information by using the senses |
| inference | A logical conclusion one can draw from the presented details. |
| Prediction | A statement of what will happen in the future or next in a sequence of events |
| Qualitative | An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers. |
| Quantitative | an observation that is measurable such as amount, height, length, weight etc. |
| Experiment | an organized procedure to study something under controlled conditions |
| hypothesis | a possible explanation for an observation that can be tested. |
| variable | A factor that can be changed in an experiment |
| independent variable | the one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment. Also called the test variable |
| dependent variable | the factor that changes in response to the independent variable in an experiment. Also known as the outcome variable |
| controlled variable | the variables that are kept the same during an experiment |
| control group | The experimental group where the independent variable is not changed. |
| evidence | information, facts, or data that scientists collect through scientific methods to support or refute scientific ideas, hypotheses or theories. |
| model | a representation of an object or system. Can be 3-D, flat, an equation, or computer simulation. |
| scientific theory | a system of ideas that explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence acquired through scientific investigation |
| scientific law | A rule that describes a pattern in nature |
