Rhetoric Situation

Unit 1

Rhetoric the study of effective and persuasive language use -the specific choices the writer makes to convey a specific message to the specific audience -analyzes the effectiveness of choices based on what the speaker knows about the audience
components of rhetorical situation exigence, purpose, audience, context, writer/speaker, message
exigence the specific occasion or event that prompted the message to be spoken or written
audience who is the writer speaking to Who are they? What do they already know? What is their attitude about the subject?
purpose why is the speaker conveying a message
context the circumstances surrounding a situation
writer/speaker who is doing the writing What is the character/persona of the writer? (EX: comedian, expert, scholar, etc)
message what the writer wants the audience to think or know
tone
mood
appeals strategic choices writers make based on the rhetorical situation in order to persuade the audience
three appeals ethos pathos
ethos (ethics) - appeal to shared beliefs/values -credibility or trust factor proof of a speaker's character
pathos (emotion) appeals to emotion
logos (logic) appeal to logic or reason
antithesis
