TermDefinition
science The systematic study of the natural world through observation and experimentation.
empirical evidence Information acquired by observation or experimentation that can be verified.
pseudoscience Claims, beliefs, or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on scientific method.
experiment A controlled procedure carried out to test a hypothesis or discover data.
hypothesis A testable, tentative explanation for a scientific problem or observation.
independent variable The factor that is deliberately changed by the experimenter.
observation The act of gathering information about the world using the senses.
dependent variable The factor that is measured or observed to see how it changes.
data Facts, figures, or pieces of information gathered during an investigation.
model A representation of an object, system, or idea used to understand it better.
technology The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes and problem-solving.
engineering The practical application of science and math to design and build structures or processes.
trade-off Giving up one favorable quality or advantage to gain another.
prototype A preliminary, working model of a design used for testing and evaluation.
