| Term | Definition |

| Map | 2d representation of a geographic area or place |
| Cartographer | A person who makes maps and/or collects the data for them |
| Data Aggregation | The process of collecting and organizing large amounts of information |
| Spatial Patters | The placement of objects on earth's surface(including the space between them) |
| Time-Distance Decay | The idea that the near things/places are more related than distant things/places. Interactions decrease the farther apart something is. |
| Absolute directions | Specific directions such and West, North, East, and South also including the combinations of those directions. |
| Map Scale | Distance on the map compared the distance in reality |
| Scale | The territorial extent on an idea or object |
| Absolute distance | Distance using units of measurements such as inches, miles, feet, etc. |
| Relative distance | Distance of things using social, cultural, or economic similarity despite there actual distances |
| Relative directions | Directions such as above, behind, left, right, etc. |
| Elevation | Distance above sea level |
| Isoline | Connects points of equal value on a map |
| Topographic Map | A graphic representation of earth's 3d surface |
| Reference Maps | Maps that show precise location like cities, oceans, etc. |
| Thematic Map | A map that shows spatial patterns or specific statistics |
| Choropleth Map | A map that shows data using colors |
| Cartogram | Changes the shapes of the map based on small or large values |
| Graduated Circle Map | Shows data using symbols |
| Dot density Map | A map that uses dots to represent numbers |
| Mercator Projection | preserves the true compass directions but is increasingly more distorted the farther from the equator |
| Peters Projection | Preserves true land and area sizes but can distort their shapes |
| Goode homolosine Projection | Is accurate but lacks map continuity |
| Polar | Looks down from the pole but that ends up only showing half of Earth |
| Robinson | Accurate with minimal distortion |
| Who gathers geographic data | individual data gatherers and cartographers |
| Census | An official survey recording data with details from individuals (like hair color,etc.) |
| Fieldwork | Research done involving first hand experiences away from an office/classroom |
| Absolute Location | Precise position on earth's surface |
| Latitude | The horizontal lines across earth's surface parallel to the equator (0 degrees and the poles are 90 degrees) |
| Longitude | Vertical Lines across earth's surface connecting the north and South pole |
| Prime Meridian | Like the equator of longitude its the 0 degrees of longitude located in Greenwich, England |
| GPS | Global Positioning System that includes 24 satellites that orbit earth twice daily and transmit radio signals to earth. It's the basis of most map-based apps. |
| GIS | Global Information System is a software application for capturing,storing,checking, and displaying data related to earths position. It helps research. |
| Remote Sensing | Scanning of Earth by satellite or high-flying aircrafts to get information |
| Aerial Photography | Remote Sensing photography that produces quality information |
| Satellite Imagery | Images of Earth from sensors on satellites that include invisible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum allowing humans to view electromagnetic patterns, |
