| Term | Definition |

| Melody | Musical lines, succession of pitches, similar to a sentence |
| Characteristics of a Melody | Range, Interval, Contour, Conjuct, Disjunct |
| Range | How far it is from highest to lowest note |
| Interval | What is the difference between the succeeding note that comes after, can be range sometimes |
| Contour | The line of the note, graph notation. Ex. Ascending, descending, a juror, static, arch, wave. |
| Conjuct | Melodies move in very small intervals, same spot, connect in manner, shapes look like rolling l’s |
| Disjunct | Notes are further from each other, leaps/skips |
| Ascending | Line going up |
| Descending | Line going down |
| Angular | Notes far from each other on instrument |
| Static | Same notes in a row, 1 note change difference in pattern |
| Arch | Like a paranthesis |
| Wave | Like a flat S |
| Structure of a melod | Phrase, Cadence, Climax |
| Phrase | A unit of a larger musical structure, a smaller part of a |
| Cadence | The tone |
| Climax | The highest or lowest note, look for extremes |
| Countermelody | Two melodies playing at the same time, one begins after the other synchronizing |
| Movement of music in time | Temporal art, Rhythm |
| Beat | Basic unit of rhythyn; pulse, accented beats |
| Meter | Organized patterns of rhythmic pulses |
| Rhythym and Meter | Musical Time, music measured in time |
| Accented Beats | Some beats are stronger than others, leads to organized patterns |
| Downbeat | First beat of the measure |
| Upbeat | Last belt of the measure |
| Duple meter | 2 beats |
| Triple meter | 3 beats |
| Quadruple meter | 4 beats |
| Simple meters | Duple subdivisions (2 or 4) |
| Compound meters | Three beats, sextuple beats |
| Syncopation | Also known as offbeat |
| Polyrhythm | Two against three, or three against four, duple against compound meters |
| Additive meter | 5/4 = 2 + 3 or 3+2, 7/4 = 3 + 4 or 4+ 3 |
| Harmony | Musical Space |
