Classification of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| Acids | Substances that donate protons or accept pairs of valence electrons. They taste sour and turn blue litmus paper red. |
| Bases | Substances that accept protons or donate pairs of valence electrons. They taste bitter and feel slippery. |
| pH | A scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral |
| Adhesion | The attraction between different substances, such as water sticking to a glass surface. |
| Cohesion | The attraction between molecules of the same substance, like water molecules sticking together. |
| Surface Tension | The property of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force due to the cohesive nature of its molecules. |
| Capillary Action | The ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. |
| Chemical bond | The force that holds atoms together in a substance |
| Compound | A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together. |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one type of atom. |
| Heterogeneous mixture | A mixture in which the different substances are not evenly mixed and can often be seen separately. |
| Homogeneous mixture | A mixture that is evenly mixed throughout. |
| Mixture | Two or more substances combined physically, but not chemically. |
| Pure substance | Matter made of only one type of particle, such as an element or compound. |
| Solution | A homogeneous mixture in which one substance dissolves evenly in another. |
| Brittle | Easily broken or shattered when force is applied. |
| Conductivity | The ability of a material to allow heat or electricity to pass through it. |
| Density | The amount of mass packed into a given volume. |
| Ductility | The ability of a material to be pulled or stretched into a wire. |
| Dull | Having little or no shine or reflection. |
| Fluorescence | The ability of a substance to absorb energy and give off visible light. |
| Luster | The way a substance reflects light from its surface. |
| Magnetism | The ability of a material to be attracted to a magnet or act like a magnet. |
| Malleability | The ability of a material to be hammered or pressed into thin sheets without breaking. |
| Metal | An element that is usually shiny, malleable, ductile, and a good conductor of heat and electricity. |
| Metalloid | An element with properties of both metals and nonmetals. |
| Nonmetal | An element that generally lacks the properties of metals and is usually a poor conductor. |
| Periodic table | A chart that organizes elements according to their properties and atomic structure. |
| Physical property | A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into a new substance. |
| Rare earth element | A group of metallic elements with unique properties that are important in many technologies. |
