States of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space; everything around us is made of matter |
| particle | a very small piece of matter (like an atom or molecule) that makes up solids, liquids, and gases |
| condensation | the process where a gas changes into a liquid, often when it cools and forms droplets |
| state | a condition or form of matter (solid, liquid, or gas) that describes how its particles are arranged and move |
| solid | a state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume; particles are tightly packed and only vibrate in place |
| gas | a state of matter with no definite shape and no definite volume; it spreads out to fill any container and particles move freely |
| evaporation | the process where a liquid changes into a gas, usually from the surface when heated or left standing |
| melting | the process where a solid becomes a liquid when it is heated and particles gain energy to move more freely |
| freezing | the process where a liquid becomes a solid when it loses heat and particles slow down and lock into place |
| liquid | a state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape; it takes the shape of its container and particles move past each other |
