Special senses Specialized receptors located in structures of the head, including the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth
Chemoreceptors Respond to changes in chemical concentrations
Chemoreceptor examples Smell, taste, and oxygen concentration
Pain receptors (nociceptors) Respond to tissue damage
Pain receptor stimuli Mechanical, electrical, and thermal energy
Thermoreceptors Respond to moderate changes in temperature
Mechanoreceptors Respond to mechanical forces that distort the receptor
Mechanoreceptor examples Touch, tension, blood pressure, and stretch
Photoreceptors Respond to light
Where are photoreceptors found? Eyes
Sensory adaptation Ability to ignore unimportant or continuous stimuli
What are general senses associated with? Skin, muscles, joints, and viscera
What are the 3 groups of general senses? Exteroceptive, interoceptive, and proprioceptive senses
Exteroceptive senses Senses associated with the body surface
Examples of exteroceptive senses Touch, pressure, temperature, and pain
Interoceptive (visceroceptive) senses Senses associated with changes in the viscera (internal organs)
Example of an interoceptive sense Blood pressure stretching blood vessels
Proprioceptive senses Senses associated with changes in muscles, tendons, and joints; tell you body position
Examples of proprioceptive senses Stimulated when changing position or exercising
What 3 mechanoreceptors respond to touch and pressure? Free nerve endings, tactile (Meissner's) corpuscles, and lamellated (Pacinian) corpuscles
Free nerve endings Sense itching, pain, and other sensations
Tactile (Meissner's) corpuscles Detect fine touch and texture
Lamellated (Pacinian) corpuscles Detect heavy pressure and vibrations
