| Term | Definition |

| protagonist | The main character in a story. The plot usually focuses on this character’s goals, challenges, and experiences. |
| antagonist | A character, group, or force that opposes the protagonist and creates conflict. |
| round character | A complex character with multiple personality traits, emotions, and motivations. They feel realistic and developed. |
| flat character | A simple character who has few traits and is not deeply developed. |
| static character | A character who stays mostly the same throughout the story and does not experience an important change. |
| dynamic character | A character who changes significantly because of events or experiences in the story. |
| theme | The central message or lesson about life or human nature that a story communicates. |
| internal conflict | A struggle that happens inside a character’s mind or emotions, such as deciding between right and wrong. |
| external conflict | A struggle between a character and something outside themselves, such as another person, society, nature, or a situation. |
| flashback | A scene or event that takes place earlier in the story and is shown to the reader to provide background information. |
| foreshadowing | Hints or clues that suggest something important may happen later in the story. |
| mood | The feeling or atmosphere a story creates for the reader, such as suspense, sadness, excitement, or fear. |
| tone | The author’s attitude toward the subject or characters, which can be serious, humorous, sarcastic, hopeful, or critical. |
