plantation a large farm on which a single crop is usually grown.
compromise people on both sides of an issue giving up something to reach an agreement.
abolitionist a person who supported the movement to end slavery.
secession to formally stop being part of something.
blockade a barrier of troops or ships to keep people and supplies from moving in or out of an area.
proclamation an official announcement,usually by the government.
emancipation the setting free of enslaved African Americans.
seige a military blockade designed to make a city surrender.
segregation the separation of groups of people, usually by race.
sharecropping a system in which someone who owns land rents the land to others in exchange for some of the crops raised on the land.
