The US Constitution

constitution a guide that establishes the laws, structure, and organization of government
Articles of Confederation nation's first constitution; established a very week central government
US Constitution US' second constitution that established federal system of government we have today
Three-Fifths Compromise enslaved persons counted as 3/5 of a person for representation in Congress and taxation
Great Compromise established a bicameral Congress (two-houses) for state representation - Senate (based on equal representation) and the House of Representatives (based on population)
Virginia Plan idea that Congress should be a bicameral legislature in which representation was based on population
New Jersey Plan idea that Congress should be a unicameral legislature in which representation was based on equal representation (each state had equal vote)
Commerce Clause a statement in the US Constitution that Congress would regulate foreign and interstate trade, would not create taxes on exports, and would not interfere with the slave trade for 20 years
Limited government a government that is not all powerful and answers to the people it serves
Rule of Law political leaders are expected to follow the laws they make; no person is above the law
Federalism division of power between the state and national government
Separation of Powers power of the national government is divided amongst the three branches of government
Checks and Balances each branch of government can check the other two branches so they do not become more powerful
Popular Sovereignty a government that gets its powers from the people who elect them; a government of the people, by the people, and for the people;
Ratification to formally approve
Federalists supported a strong central/national government
Anti-Federalists supported stronger states rights and a weaker central/national government
Bill of Rights the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution that detail individual rights/liberties of the American people
bicameral a two house legislature
unicameral a one house legislature
