Oil Rig

| Drawworks | Hoists the drill string and provides drilling power |
| Crane | Lifts equipment and supplies |
| Mud system | Circulates drilling fluid to cool the bit and carry cuttings |
| Helipad | Transport for crew and emergency use |
| BOP stack | Blowout preventer to prevent uncontrolled release of pressure |
| Drill string and drill bit | Drill pipe transports power to the bit, which drills into the seabed |
| What is an oil rig | A giant machine for drilling a controlled hole through the ocean floor and into underground rock formations |
| Top drive | A powerful motor near the top of the drill string that rotates it |
| Drilling mud | Fluid that cools the drill bit and carries rock cuttings back into the surface. Also provides hydrostatic pressure |
| Kick | Oil, gas, or formation fluid can enter the wall |
| Cement | Used for between the casing and the surrounding rock. Holds casing in place and helps prevent fluids from moving between geological formations. |

| How to evaluate rock formation for oil | Rock cuttings, formation pressure, mud properties, geological data, porosity... |
| Oil reservoir | Typically porous rock containing fluids like oil, natural gas, water. The rock needs sufficient permeability for oil to move through the reservoir. |
| How does oil get to the surface | Reservoir pressure may be enough to push fluids upward (Natural flow). or through gas lift. |
| Gas lift | Gas is injected into the production tubing, reducing the effective density of the fluid column and helping production flow upward. |
