| control group | the group used as a standard from comparison in an experiment |
| experimental group | the group that receives the condition or treatment being tested |
| trial | one complete repetition of an experiment |
| repeated trials | performing an experiment multiple times to improve reliability |
| procedure | a step by step set of directions for carrying out an investigation |
| lab safety | rules and practices used to prevent accidents and injuries during lab activities |
| safety goggles | protective eyewear worn to protect the eyes during lab activities |
| safety equipment | tools such as goggles, gloves, aprons, and eyewash stations used to reduce risk |
| hazard | something that could cause injury, damage, or harm in a lab |
| chemical safety | practices used to safely handle, store, and dispose of chemicals |

| source of error | factors that may cause experimental results to differ from expected results |
| biohazard | biological organisms that are of potential harm or risk to humans |
| disinfectant | the use of chemicals to destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms that may cause disease or illness |
| sterilization | the use of heat for the complete destruction or elimination of all microorganisms |
