Classification

TermDefinition
Cell The smallest unit that can perform all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane and contain DNA and cytoplasm
Stimulus Anything that causes a reaction or change in an organism or any part of an organism
Homeostasis The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment
Sexual Reproduction Reproduction in which the sex cells from two parents unite to produce offspring that share traits from both parents
Asexual Reproduction Reproduction that does not involve the union of sex cells and in which one parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid, a molecule that is present in all living cells and that contains the information that determines the traits a living thing inherits and needs to live
Heredity The passing of genetic material from parent to offspring
Metabolism All the chemical processes going on in a body that helps keep it alive
Producer An organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings
Consmer An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
Decomposer An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients
Carnivore An organism that eats animals
Omnivore An organism that eats both plants and animals
Abiotic Factor An environmental factor that is not associated with the activities of living organisms
Biotic Factor An environmental factor that is associated with or results from the activities of living organisms
Taxonomy The study of the classification and organization of living things
Domain In a taxonomic system, one of the three broad groups that all living things fall into
Species A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring
Genus The level of classification that comes after family and that contains similar species
Eukaryote An organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; eukaryotes include protists, animals, plants, and fungi, but not archaea or bacteria
Prokaryote A single-celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles; examples are archaea and bacteria
Multicellular An organism that is made up of two or more cells
Unicellular An organism that is made up of one cell
Autotroph An organism that can make its own food
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food
Herbivore An organism that eats only plants
