Basic terms including stage directions, acting descriptions
| Term | Definition |

| Gait | pattern of limb movement on a solid surface; reveals motivation and personality. (how someone walks/moves) |
| Posture | you know what posture is |
| Pace | speed of speaking/moving |
| Blocking | movement of actors on stage |
| Intonation | rise and fall of voice when speaking |
| Aside | a remark that is intended to be heard by the audience but not the other characters in the play |
| Monologue | a long speech by one character |
| Soliloquy | speaking one's thoughts aloud by oneself regardless of anyone who could hear (especially in a play) |
| Cues | visual, verbal, and nonverbal. A thing that is said or done that is a signal to another performer to enter/start talking |
| Wings | sides of a stage out of view of the audience |
| Comic relief | a funny that offsets the serious |
| Proxemics | proximity between actors/characters |
| Stage Direction | an instruction in the text off a play that indicates tone/movement/position/sound effects/lighting |
| Syntax | the manner in which words/punctuation are arranged |
| Denotation | literal meaning of a word |
| Connotation | implied meaning of a word (or associative) |
| Apostrophe | when one directly addresses an absent person as if they were present |
| Stanza | a group of lines forming a verse/poem |
| Juxtaposition | placing two things near each other to present comparison or contrast |
| Allusion | a reference to something literary, mythological, or historical that the author assumes the reader will recognize. Basically they reference something from real life |
