Diffusion & Osmosis
GTCC BIO 168
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Osmosis | Movement of water only |
| Passive Transport | The movement of water molecules traveling across the membrane Does not require energy |
| High Water concentration | a solution has a lot of water molecules and very few dissolved parts, like salt or sugar |
| Low Water Concentration | Greater Solute Concentration |
| Solute | salt and sugar that dissolves |
| Solvent | usually a liquid (Water) |
| Hypertonic (high) | High solute concentration |
| Hypotonic (low) | Low solute concentration (Less) |
| Isotonic = ISO means same | equal tension |
| Valence shell | outside of an atom |
| Concentration Gradient | spread out or move from an area of high (crowded) to low (less crowded) |
| Diffusion | movement of solvent (salt/sugar) spread out until equally distributed. Down the concentration gradient |
| Water will follow | Salt, sugar, and protein |
| Hemolysis | break the red blood cells (explode) |
| Crenation | Shrinks/Dehydrates the cell |
| Semi-permeable membrane | some things, not all, passes through. Based on the size, shape, charge, and if lipid. |
| Solution | Solvent + Solute |
| Tonicity | Concentration of stuff |
