| Term | Definition |

| major characters | the protagonist, antagonist, and other characters that have a large role in a story. |
| protagonist | The most important character in the story |
| antagonist | the character or force that or opposes the protagonist |
| minor characters | characters who take place in the action but not the main focus of the story |
| static characters | characters who do not change throughout the story |
| dynamic characters | characters that do change throughout the story |
| characterization | the way that the author reveals the traits of characters |
| direct characterization | the author directly states the characters traits |
| indirect characterization | requires the reader to infer a character's traits |
| plot | The sequence of events a story follows |
| exposition | The first part of a story; it introduces the setting, characters, and the basic situation |
| inciting incident | the part of the story where the central conflict is revealed |
| rising action | the part of the story where the conflict increases or becomes more complicated to resolve characters or complicated to resolve, characters are developed, and suspense is built |
| climax | turning point in the story, typically the most interesting or suspenseful part of the story where the conflict is addressed |
| falling action | gradual subsiding of action after the climax |
| resolution | part of the story when the conflict is solved |
| denouement | any action or events that take place after the central conflict has been resolved, may or may not be present is stories |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
