TermDefinition
Active Directory (AD) Microsoft technology found in Windows Server that is used to manage computers and other devices on a network.
answer file A file of information that Windows required in order to do an unattended installation
Azure Active Directory (Azure AD or AAD) Microsoft domain services managed by Microsoft servers in the cloud. Windows 10 business and professional editions support it
BitLocker a security feature that encrypts an entire volume on a drive to protect the data and can provide full hard drive encryption
boot loader menu A startup menu in a dual-boot system that gives the user the choice of which operating system to load, such as Windows 10 or Windows 8. Multiplies OSs are installed on a dual-boot system
Control Panel A Windows window containing several small utility programs called applets that are used to manage hardware, software, users, and the system
Device Manager A feature in the Windows operating system that lets you view and change the properties of all hardware devices attached to the computer
diskpart A Windows command used to manage the hard drives, partitions and volumes
DNS (Domain Name System or Domain Name Services) server A device that receives a request containing an IP address and matches the address to a FQDN.
Domain is a type of client/server network, which is a network where resources are managed by centralized computers
drive imaging the process of creating an exact copy of a hard drive, or partition, for use in disaster recovery and backup procedures.
dynamic IP address an IP address that is assigned by a server each time the workstation connects to the network
gateway a device through which network traffic flows from one network to another
Group Policy used by Windows Server in a Windows domain to control what users and computers can do on the network
hardware signature Information kept on Microsoft activation servers along with a digital license to identify a machine that has activated a Windows installation
Hyper-V Windows hypervisor that allows you to create and use virtual machines in Windows Pro
Hypervisor Software that runs on a physical computer and manages one or more virtual machine operating systems
Loadstate A command used by the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to copy user settings and data temporarily stored on a server or removable media to a new computer
local account A Windows user account that applies only to the local computer and cannot be used to access resources from other computers on the network
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) A suite of Microsoft tools that can automate a Windows installation
peer-to-peer (P2P) As applied to networking, a network of computers that are all equals, or peers. Each computer has the same amount of authority, and each can act as a server to the other computers
Persistent Memory (PMem) a memory technology that retains its contents even when power is turned off and is faster than normal memory when interfacing with solid-state storage devices
Preboot eXecution Environment or Pre-Execution Environment (PXE) programming contained in BIOS/UEFI that can start up the computer and search for a server on the network that can provide a bootable operating system
provisioning package A package of settings, apps, and data specific to an enterprise that is downloaded and installed on a device when it first joins Azure Active Directory
push automation An installation automatically pushed by a server to a computer when a user is not likely to be manning the computer
Quality of Service (QoS) Prioritizing applications on a network
Resilient File System (ReFS) file system with enhanced performance and improved fault tolerance to better protect data from corruption
scanstate A command used by the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to copy user settings and data from an old computer to a server or removable media
single sign-on (SSO) account Using one authentication credential to access multiple accounts or applications
standard image an image that includes Windows, drivers, applications, and data, which are standard to all computers that might use the image
static IP address an IP address that is permanently assigned to the computer
subnet mask four decimal numbers separated by periods that tells Windows whether a remote computer is on the same or a different network
System Information A Windows tool (Msinfo32.exe) that provides details about a system, including installed hardware and software, the current system configuration, and currently running programs
unattended installation A Windows installation in which answers to installation questions are stored in a file that Windows calls so that they do not have to be typed in during the installation
User State Migration Tool (USMT) A Windows utility that helps you migrate user files and preferences from one computer to another to help a user make a smooth transition from one computer to another
usmtutils A command used by the User State Migration Tool (USMT) that provides encryption options and hard-link management
virtual private network (VPN) a security technique that encrypts data transmitted between a private network and a computer somewhere on the Internet
Windows Defender Anti-malware software embedded in Windows 10 that can detect viruses, prevent them and clean up a system infected with viruses and other malware
Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) A minimum operating system used to start the Windows installation
Workgroup a logical group of computers and users that share resources, where administration, resources, and security on a workstation are controlled by that workstation
