| physical property | a characteristic of matter that can be obsereved and or measured |
| magnetism | the ability of a material to be attrackted to a magnet without needing to be a magnet themselves |
| conductivity | ability for energy such as electricity and heat to move through a material |
| reflectivity | the way light bounces off an object |
| solubility | the maximum amount of a substance that can be dissolved by another substance |
| chemical property | a characteristic of a substance that can only be observed when it undergoes a chemical change |

| nucleus | the center of an atom that has most of its mass |
| proton | a particle in the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of positive electric charge |
| neutron | a particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no electric charge |
| electron | a particle in the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge |
| mixture | a physical combination of two more substances |
| colloid | a type of mixture in which the particles of one material are scattered through another and block the passage of light without settling out |
| solution | a mixture of substances that are blended so completely that the mixture looks the same everywhere |
| alloy | a solution of a metal and at least one other solid which is often also a metal |
| molecule | a particle that contains more than one atom joined together |
