Cell The fundamental unit of life. Smallest unit of biological organization that displays all the properties of life
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function
Organ Combination of two or more separate tissues performing a common function
Organ System Group of related organs working together
Organism Individual living thing
Population Level of biological organization that includes groups of organisms of the same species occupying a certain area
Community Assemblage of populations interacting with one another within the same environment
Ecosystem Biological community together with the associated abiotic environment; characterized by energy flow and chemical cycling
Biosphere Zone of air, land, and water at the surface of the earth in which living organisms are found
Energy The capacity to do work.
Metabolism The sum of all chemical reactions that occur within a cell or organism
Photosynthesis Process of converting the sun's energy into chemical energy
Homeostasis A constant internal environment
Reproduce Passing on genetic information to the next generation
Growth An increase of size or number of cells
Development A group of stages where a zygote becomes an organism or changes during its life span
DNA Nucleic acid polymer produced from covalent bonds of nucleotide monomers containing deoxyribose
Genes Unit of heredity existing as alleles on the chromosomes
Mutations Alteration in chromosome structure/number and also alteration in a gene due to DNA composition changes
Natural Selection Mechanism of evolutionary change resulting in adaptation to the environment
Adaptation An organism's modification in structure, function or behavior.
