Autoimmune Abnormal condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against (attacks) its own tissues. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
congenital a condition that is present at birth and may be the result of either genetic or environmental factors; ex cerebral palsy
genetic inherited or passed on from one's parents
Endemic a disease that is ongoing and restricted to a certain population, group or area of land.
Epidemic sudden, widespread outbreak of disease within a population, group or area of land
Pandemic when a particular disease affects the global population
Nosocomial hospital acquired infection
Opportunistic infections that occur more often or are more severe in patients with weakened immune systems
Observation looking at and asking questions to gather data
Manifestation the ways in which a disease presents itself
Signs (OBJECTIVE) observed and noted by healthcare professional. Can be measured: Temp/BP/RR/HR
Symptoms (SUBJECTIVE) NOT measurable - pain/nausea/fatigue/weakness
Inspection observation of one or more areas on the body.
Auscultation Using a stethoscope to listen to the sounds of the body
Palpation application of pressure to assess for abnormalities
Percussion tapping areas on the surface of the body to assess organ size and whether is fluid or air filled.
Olfaction Use of smell to detect abnormalities
Diagnostic testing Use of lab, x-rays and other tests or procedures to help diagnose disease.
Diagnosis ID of a health condition.
Prognosis forecast or prediction of the probable outcome of the disease or condition
acronym is formed from the initial letters of words. (ex:AIDS, which stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.)

endogenous An injury or condition that originates within the body; for example, circulatory disorders, diabetes, and immune system disorders.

hypersensitivity Condition in which the body’s immune system has an exaggerated response to an antigen, a substance that is harmful or perceived by the body to be harmful; allergy.
iatrogenic An infection or disease that arises as a complication of medical or surgical intervention. Radiation and chemotherapy, for example, commonly produce the iatrogenic effects of nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and anemia.
immunological Pertaining to a reaction between an antigen and an antibody, a protein that the body makes in response to an antigen.
infectious capable of causing infection
inflammatory Marked by inflammation (redness, heat, fever, and swelling) or caused by inflammation.
metabolic A disorder that interferes with normal metabolism, the chemical processes involved in converting food to energy and in sustaining life; diabetes, for example.
malaise A feeling of general discomfort or uneasiness.
metastasis cancer spreading to other parts of body
nosocomial An infection acquired in a hospital setting that was not present upon admission. Pneumonia is a common nosocomial infection.
nutritional Relating to chemical processes in the body that occur after ingesting (eating) food.
prophylaxis taking action or medical treatment to prevent a disease or health problem before it starts (preventing)
syndrome A set of signs or symptoms that occur together as part of a disease process.
auscultation use of a stethoscope to listen to sounds within body cavities
palpation application of light or firm pressure on the skin above internal organs or structures to check for abnormalities
percussion apping areas on the surface of the body to produce a vibrating sound. The nature of the sound indicates the size of the organ, whether it is filled with air or fluid, and so on.
